Marine Video Update

Many of you will remember the video made in Iraq by one Marine of another Marine tossing a puppy off a cliff. We thought you might like an update, in case you haven't already heard about the outcome.

"Lance Cpl. David Motari, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Bay, is 'being processed for separation' from the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps said in a news release. He also received unspecified 'non-judicial punishment.'" Motari was the one identified as the puppy-tosser.

"The second Marine, Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion, also received unspecified "non-judicial" punishment. "

More information is posted here, here and here. We are posting 3 separate news articles because articles are often moved, deleted or archived online.

We are relieved to note the Marine Corp. considered this conduct unbecoming one of their own. We hope both men who were involved have received a psychological evaluation.

As Jan wrote in a letter to the Public Affairs Office of Marine Corps Base Hawaii: This incident concerns me greatly, as does any act of violence against a human or an animal. It is a well-documented fact that animal abuse and human abuse are closely entwined. What I believe is that anyone who would commit such a horrible act as was demonstrated in the video and to laugh at it is not a newcomer to violence. And I'm not referring to what he learned while at war.

And we agree with what HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle wrote to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. "We worry about the psychological stability of those who could perpetrate such vicious acts against the most vulnerable of creatures."

We are grateful there are many military personnel overseas, who despite facing the same fears, frustrations and emotions as these Marines did on their overseas duty, don't torture or kill animals. They help rescue those they can. We have great respect for our military personnel overseas.

We continue to hope Judge Effron, Chief Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, will move to include cruelty to all animals in the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

  4. The other 99.99% of our brave men and women in the services probably approve of this outcome.

  5. I don't even want to watch it...

There is a new DVD rental release, called Untraceable. FBI/detective movie.

The very first scene is this psycho filming a sadistic cat trust/torture experiment. Hearing the cat meowing for food in the cage was enough. (I'm not even going say what looked about to happen when it got out to eat.)
I stopped the dvd, put it back in the box and took it back to the rental place. My movie rating: "10 bags of kitty poop."

  7. Momma could not watch the video. Nothing makes her sadder than abusing those that cannot defend themselves.

  8. We love u guys for giving the abused/hurted animals a voice.
Those cuckoos should just stick their heads into litterboxes that have not been cleaned out yet.

  9. Thank you for the update on this case. Mama could not watch the video because things like this make her very angry and sad. But she appreciates all you do to help animals.

We are glad that the majority of the Marines do not fall into this category of abusing animals and that they do not condone it.

    Love -

  10. Thanks for sending that great letter. It said everything! Here's a happy story: I have a friend whose brother (Navy seal) saved 2 dogs from Afghanistan--very pretty saluki mixes. He would have taken 3 but they only allowed 2. What he had to go through to get them home!! He arranged months ahead of time then the week before leaving they said the dogs had to go separately. He refused to leave until he could go WITH them so he was stuck there another week. Then it was changed from one flight to 4stops so he had to make sure they were on each leg. I met them--quite exotic looking. Now he's going to work for internal US security. Kinda makes you feel safer knowing someone who really cares is caring for us!

    much love & wags,

  12. I'm relieved that the military took action against these animal abusers. It's a shame our military had to be blackened by the likes of these sick individuals as they are not what our brave men and women are all about. Thanks for posting this.
