Memorial Day 2011

In memory of those who have died in service to their country.

Arlington, sung by Trace Adkins.

If the video doesn't play, click here.

We are not back. With Blogger acting up, this is a good time to be on break. We just want to honor those who gave their lives for our country.

And we are asking, if you can help these folks in any way, please do so. They applied to become a non profit in Brazil and they have been trying to find funding but they are losing their home and all the 17 rescued dogs. Who will take the rescues in and give them a good home? Most likely they will end up killed.

These folks lost their business in the January 2011 flood when whole villages in Brazil were wiped out with mudslides and flooding. Their home was spared because they were on higher ground and instead of just worrying about themselves, they donated their time to helping the rescued sick, injured and suddenly homeless animals in other villages.

Please donate a few dollars, if you can. And pass this on. These folks have worked hard and done without to save dogs no one else cares about. The Sunday post is titled "last Days." Don't let this be their last days!

Playing with an Otter

This does look like a lot of fun. We need to send Jan over to try this. It looks like good exercise. For her. We'd just like to watch. And make a video of it.

If the video doesn't play, click here.

Jan calls this year - nearly half over now - a year of loss. Of so many things. She is exhausted - physically, emotionally and financially. Things have not been going well and the weather has been miserably hot and humid. She has continued to walk with us, even though she has to stop to rest a lot.

And for the past week she has been sick, barely able to talk a little at a time but as of this morning she can't talk at all. So we're going to take a break.

Have a good Memorial Day weekend.

Mom ML, Dad Kiril and Bloody Buddy

Happy Birthday, ML from all the Funny Farmers!

And lots of purrs and tail wags to daddy Kiril at Nikita & Elvira's!

You might remember Buddy has been wearing a cone collar temporarily and beating up everything and everyone he gets near because his reverse is broken and he only has one working speed - fast forward. This is what is left of his cone collar. Yep, he beat it up so badly what little protection there was for his neck started coming apart.

Jan started to put Buddy's halti on him for a walk yesterday.  His neck was wet.  She lifted his head and got a huge shock! We had quite a hot, uncomfortable weekend and the cone had scraped Buddy's neck raw. His neck is doing better today. And he is being walked with a harness instead of a halti.

Jan says Buddy is definitely unique and a real "problem child."  She worries more about him that the rest of us put together.  You think something like this is the reason why?

Armed Forces Day

As you know, we've gotten so far behind we're posting later in the day now, so we're a bit behind publishing this.

Today, Saturday, May 21 is Armed Forces Day in the United States.  It was created in 1949 when all the Armed Forces were unified under one department - the Department of Defense - and it replaced separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days.

Jan took photos at two nursing homes this year for the local VFW and we'd like to share them with you. Our WWII and Korean veterans are dying and our Vietnam vets are aging, and it is sad to see those who once fought valiantly for American freedom to now fight age and infirmity instead.

Even though many of them are wheelchair-bound, they were happy to assemble for group photos. We are very proud of each of them.

And we think the song, Sacrifice for Me - written and sung by Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys - is appropriate for this post so we'd like to share it with you today. You might want to turn up your speakers.

Merci Intros Summer the Sheep

Hey, Merci here today. Yesterday was the first warm, windless day in a while, so Buddy, Sam and I had a bath. Buddy's lampshade ... sorry, Buddy's cone collar got a bath too.   Sam got scrubbed cause he's had a big dirty patch on both sides of his white coat for months that just wouldn't wash off.  It looks better but whatever he did, he sure ground it in.

I have a neat video for you today. For months, Summer was unable to stand or walk on her own due to neurological damage to her spinal cord caused by a parasite.  Without treatment she would have died.  Still, she might never walk again.  So this is a video of Summer the sheep being fitted with a special wheelchair designed by Eddie Grinnell of Eddie's Wheels in Massachusetts, who has helped dogs, cats and even farm animals with mobility issues.

We'd take our hats off to Eddie but we aren't wearing one at the moment. However, Buddy has volunteered to take off his lampshade ... uh, cone collar.

Hey, don't forget to go by The Furry Bambinos. Meerkat and Panda Bear are celebrating their 4th birthday and for every real (not spam) comment they receive on their post by this Sunday, May 22, they will make a donation of $0.50 to the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL)"

There isn't much time left, so how about all of you kitties and woofies and even humans who put off dropping by there go leave a comment and help the Cleveland APL.

We commend them and all those who do a commentathon to raise money for a cause. It doesn't cost the reader anything so none can complain they can't spare a donation. And it means even those with empty pockets can participate. So don't pass up this opportunity to help some furries. Go visit and leave a comment.

**Sam, you can stop looking under the furniture for lost change now.**

Ferocious Buddy and Widget

Hey, Cameron here. I have some good news and some gossip. Which do you want first?

I thought so. Gossip it is.

Yesterday the dogs started barking and Jan went to the door. Buddy, Merci and Sam were barking at the meter reader. Buddy ran up and leaped at the fence, barking furiously. Jan started laughing.

Yes, laughing. She said it was hard for Buddy to look ferocious with a lampshade on his head. And the meter reader agreed.

I think Buddy is very ferocious, even when he's wearing a lampshade.  **Don't forget, Buddy, you owe me a bag of cat treats for being your character witness.**

Oh, and Buddy reminded me he has something to say to Jan and the meter reader for insulting him.

Uh, I believe no explanation is necessary.

And now for the good news.  Toby recently left a comment on our post Can Widget Come Home to let us know ...  we'll let Toby tell you.

Thank you everyone for your good thoughts. But no one has stepped up for Widget. She bonds closer to us each day, but she is so emotionally fragile, she may never be a part of the pride. But she will always have a home here with us.

Yes, thankfully the one working so hard to help Widget find a home believes Widget is a keeper. We're so glad Widget has a home of her own.

And bless you, Toby, Eric and all rescuers who do so much to help animals.

Cotton and County Kittens

Hey, Cotton here. Excuse me for talking with my mouth full but watching today's video made me hungry. Oh, for the day when I had that much energy. But I'll be turning 13 next month so I get hungry just watching those calories get burned.

Since a Petsense store opened locally last year, a number of cats have been adopted from there. It helps that their store is in the Wal-mart shopping center. It's easier for folks to pop in to see what cats are available while they are there shopping than to drive way out in the county. So this seems to be working well for both the store and the county shelter - and especially for the cats.

While Jan was there today, she stopped in and shot this very short video of three kittens playing. There should be four kittens but one climbed out several times and had to be returned to a cage. There are adult cats there too. And more at the shelter, along with a variety of dogs and puppies. So Jan thought she would practice making a video, something she hasn't tried in a long time, and put this together.  It's very plain, no frills, so don't expect violins and dancing bears.

Percy Intros Fum & Gebra

Hi, Percy here with a quick update. Buddy is out of the doghouse but on probation. The weather has gotten cooler so Jan has been busy doing things she couldn't do when she was melting into a pool of sweat last week. So we popped in for a quick post.

I'd like to introduce you to Fum & Gebra, two special friends of different species. Fum is the black cat and Gebra is a barn owl. Cotton looked up barn owls and found they eat a variety of foods but are good mouse and rodent hunters and will even feast on a reptile now and then.

We might not understand the words but the song  "Deixa'm dir una cosa" by Sopa de Cabra  is pretty.

Oh, and don't forget to visit the CB Auction for the kitties of Wee Paws Sanctuary.

Jan enjoyed making the background and header for the auction. And after she finished, she suddenly realized how to improve our own background of pink flowers. And then she complained she needs a vacation. Gees, you'd think she'd done some work or something. Whose fault is it she has to redo things so many times to figure them out? Not ours! As usual, we're completely innocent. And if necessary, we'll hire Sam to defend us.

Sam Proves Buddy Innocent

Hey, Sam here today as Buddy's attorney of record.

Buddy categorically denies all charges leveled against him in Thursday's post. You know the one we posted Thursday before Blogger went down and deleted all posts from that day. When Blogger replaced it yesterday, it was re-dated Friday the 13th. So I am referring to the double-posted accusation that Buddy has been harassing, intimidating, and/or threatening any member of this household, especially Jan!

Here I am with my client with proof of Buddy's innocence. Does he look like a menace to society? (**Buddy, wipe that grin off your face and at least try to look wrongfully accused.**)

Notice the pristine condition of Buddy's new cone collar. Obviously the fraying around the edges is indicative of inferior quality material. If it can't withstand a few hundred thousand collisions in a couple of days, it should be taken off the market. And the scratches? Well, the cashier must have made mince meat of it while ringing it up.

Clearly my client has been falsely accused. He would like to say a few carefully rehearsed words in his own defense.

Buddy: Thank you, Sam. I appreciate you taking my case without recompense since Jan has hidden her empty checkbook and wallet so I can't hire a competent um, I mean, a licensed attorney.

I am completely innocent of deliberately attacking or trying to kill Jan. The reason for the misunderstanding is simple: I am disabled. My reverse gear is broken and my forward has only one speed - high. Yes, Jan had to dance a few dozen times to protect her toes. Yes, I inadvertently rammed her legs a few hundred times, tripped her, and stubbornly pushed one way on the door while she was pushing the other, but all these incidents were the result of my disability. And according to the Canines with Disabilities Act, I can not be discriminated against for being a klutz.

And as to Jan's claim I tried to push her through an unopened window, it's actually her own fault! If she had turned around and come down the step stool forward instead of backward she would have seen me rushing toward her in case she needed help. But, no, she just had to step on my collar.

So, I hope Jan will ask forgiveness for stepping on my head and we can put this behind us.

Sam: Okay, Buddy, I think our case has been sufficiently presented. Thank you all for listening. If any of you would like to start a "Pardon for Buddy" petition or email Jan to remind her of what a gentle, obedient fruitcake ... uh, loyal companion Buddy has been these past 7 years, we would appreciate the support.

Buddy: How did I do, Sam? Do you think think Jan will buy it?

Sam: She's not going to believe a word, Buddy, not a word.

We Deny All Charges

Since Blogger has just restored this post (minus the comments) after having been down since yesterday and readers have not been able to access blogs, we decided to re-post this for today. Otherwise our follow-up post will make no sense.

Yep, it's me, Rusty. I am hoping if I post a funny video, Jan will smile. She's not in a very good mood the last few days. Between being under the weather, and sweating buckets while trying to get the house ready for summer, and ....

Oh, yeah, something about us furries beating her up and trying to kill her.

We categorically deny all charges! And there are no pictures, so no proof!

I want to go out and Jan hasn't been letting me lately. So I try to dash past her whenever she lets the dogs out the back door. It wasn't my fault she didn't turn on the light at 3 am this morning. If she had, she'd have known better than to throw her foot out to make a barrier. Yep, her bare toes scraped the car ramp which wasn't supposed to be sticking out there. Just because I like to move it once in a while doesn't mean her injury was my fault.

But I'm a poster boy compared to Buddy. He's been wreaking havoc on the house since Jan put a cone on his head so his skin can heal. Buddy does not know how to reverse. When the cone touches something, he throws everything into pushing forward. So if Jan is trying to open a door and Buddy is on the other side, it's a contest. If Jan is walking ahead of him, he runs into her legs and tries to move her out of the way.

Yesterday he walked into the bathroom, tried to turn around, and knocked something into the bathtub which scared Percy and Cameron who had been napping behind the shower curtain. They scurried for safety. Buddy was in their way, so they leaped over his head, and knocked a bunch of bottles and jars off a cart - almost onto Jan's bare toes.

But the topper was when Buddy tried to throw her through a window while she was climbing down from changing curtains. There was nothing to brace herself on so when she stepped back and met Buddy's cone racing forward .... Let's just say there was a lot of yelling! Some of it is on our bad word list.

So, I picked out this video to try to make her smile. If it doesn't, we'll just have to pack our bags and go visit friends until things cool down around here.

Hawaii Five-O

Thanks for the guest post by Jonathan Curtis

I love to watch television. Unfortunately some nights there are two or more programs that I enjoy that show at the same time. Monday nights are a prime example. I love to watch Castle and Hawaii Five-O. Fortunately, I have satellite television from Hawaii Five-O because it's a great action show. And who doesn't enjoy watching all that beautiful Hawaiian scenery? I've never been to the islands, myself, but I often feel as if I have just from watching this entertaining program. And it is a great remake of the old show from the sixties or seventies. The characters have the same names but they have slightly different characteristics. All of them are fun to watch--especially Alex O'Loughlin, who plays Steve McGarrett. He is a real hunky guy with a killer smile. I was amazed to learn recently that he is Australian. He does a fantastic job of sounding American.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post.  (But Jan does like to watch the new Hawaii-Five-O television show.)

Cyndi with Popcorn Kittens

Cyndi here with some popcorn chicken ... um, sorry, my stomach is growling and I was thinking of food. I mean, I'm here with some popcorn kittens to make you smile.

Just watch and listen and you'll see why they're called popcorn. :)

Have to run now. Both Buddy and Jan are a bit under the weather and the rest of us need to keep the water and food bowls full. No, we don't do the pouring and hauling, just the caterwauling and whining to get Jan's attention. It's a tough job but if we didn't keep at it, we'd starve around here, what with all of us inheriting Jan's bad memory.

So have a good day and keep cool. Or warm, depending on where you live.

Mother's Day 2011

Happy Mother's Day!

Cameron would Play Fetch

Hey, Cameron here with today's news.

First, we are so happy Precious kitty was adopted in time. You can check Brian's blog for any details.

We have a video for you. This adorable, friendly dog wants to play fetch. He does everything he can to get a man's attention so he'll throw the stick for him but the man sits there like he's a statue. He refuses to even acknowledge the dog's presence. Maybe the dog should bite that mean man's leg. He'd pay attention then.

Hey, woofie, I'm a cat but I'd throw it for you, if I could.

If the video doesn't play, click here.

Harharhar, fooled you for a minute, didn't I!

We're very sad that Chance Bond and Imp lost their woofie brother Shadow on Thursday, May 5th. He was taken tot he vet because he couldn't stand on his own and it was discovered he was in kidney failure. The news was posted on his mom's Facebook wall. We don't know whether they'll post a farewell to Shadow on their blog but you can leave a message on Chance's blog. His family really misses him.

Jerry L of CrizCats left for the bridge yesterday. Stop by and leave Criz a message of sympathy too.

And on a happier note, don't forget Auntie Stinkie's 19th birthday party Sunday 9 am to 12 noon (Pacific time). They're going to have a movie too. Where? Dr. Tweety & the Fab 5 blog.

Auntie Stinkie and Puddles for Pip

Percy here as one of our zazzle designs for this occasion. It seems appropriate since we're hanging around and resting up for the big party on Sunday.

Those who have been blogging for a while know Dr. Tweety of the Fab Five. But the family has had some health problems and haven't blogged regularly for a while, so many newer bloggers haven't met Dr T and his family yet.

Well, this is your chance to meet them. Auntie Stinkie turned 19 the beginning of May and they are throwing a big party for her this Sunday.

Their invitation is open to all their friends - old and new - so be sure to go by and help Dr. Tweety, Delilah, Maximillian and Iris celebrate their beloved Auntie Stinkie's big day.

So Sunday, May 8th, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific Time (that would be 12 noon to 3 pm Eastern Daylight Time - we're not sure about international time zones), Auntie Stinkie will host their blog and chat with her guests.

There will be the expected H-U-G-E ham, lots of nip, and probably tons of noms. Write it on your calendar and then remember to read your calendar (Are you paying attention, Jan?) We hope to see you all there.

Oh, guess you'd like to know where, wouldn't you? Dr. Tweety & da Fab Five blog.

And Puddles has decided to help Mr Pip's family sell their house (seriously, they're selling their house, just not on their blog) by having a "HOOOOOOGE Picture posting today." Puddles is the new realtor. She has all the details and some terrific photos to show potential buyers what they'd be missing if they pass up this bargain. You have got to see this to believe it. She even has a map so you won't get lost. So hurry, first come, first sold. Or is that, first come, first sale. Who cares?Just come to Puddles of 3 Doxies.

Excuse us, we have to go look for loose change to see if we can afford to buy it for ourselves. Sam could actually stretch out and be comfy there and he really wants to move in.

A Little Respect Here, Please

Hey, Sam here. This video is an oldie but it's short and sweet, and a reminder to Jan that we dogs deserve respect since we are loyal and don't make fun of our humans when their shortcomings are exposed.

Even when said human calls me "Brick Butt!"  I can't help it if I'm hyper and wiggly and accident-prone when I'm spinning.  Muscle just packs more of a wallop than fat.

Free Sample of Nutrish Just 6

This is a Sponsored post written by us on behalf of Nutrish for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% ours.

We - Buddy, Merci and Sam - recently sampled Rachael Ray's Nutrish just 6 dog food so we could write this review and also offer our canine readers an opportunity to request their own free sample.

We were pleasantly surprised when our sample arrived nestled in a small dog bowl with a non-skid bottom and wrapped in plastic with a nice bow; however, we were disappointed it was only a 6 oz package. A mere appetizer for Sam or Buddy.

Percy likes to steal our food, so we stood guard. Well, not exactly "stood" guard.

Jan has a strange habit of reading labels instead of tasting our food. The Nutrish just 6 we sampled was the Lamb Meal Brown Rice Recipe. It has lamb meal, brown rice, ground rice, dried beet pulp, poultry fat preserved with Vitamin E, natural chicken flavor and assorted vitamins and minerals. It does not have corn, wheat or soy, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, by-product meal or fillers. Jan wonders how Buddy and his skin problems would fare on this food, although she would add Omega 3 to it.

Jan splits everything except medication among the three of us. With our regular dinner, we all had a taste in proportion to our size and as Jan observed, we all seemed to enjoy it.

A portion of Rachael Ray Nutrish proceeds is donated to animal rescue organizations. To get your free sample of Nutrish just 6, while supplies last, click on free sample

Cameron is Chatty

Hey, Cameron, here with a cool kitty video for you today.

This is Rex, school mascot, mental health adviser, campus representative .... He's kind of everything you would expect a cat to be, except he has adopted an entire school. We wonder if this means extra daily treats, especially at lunchtime. If so, maybe I should ask if he needs an assistant.

If the video doesn't play, click here.

Time is quickly running out for Precious kitty. She is in a foster home in Greenville, SC, but she must be re-homed within the next 3 days! Please visit Brian's blog and help spread the word.

On a personal note, we'd like to encourage you to visit the Random Drift blog. Bubbles has lymphoma and is spending his last days sleeping outside in the garden. If you would like to send a card or just a small gift of encouragement, email KC of the Cat Blogosphere for the address.

I think we had some more news but I've forgotten what it was and Jan's trying to push me out of the typing chair so she can sit in it without squashing me, so if I remember, I'll have to use smoke signals.  Until next time -

Cotton and Klepto Kitty

Hey, Cotton here. I'm a bit sleepy today but I can nap after I finish this post.

We saw this video on Miss Kitty Says Hello. Miss Kitty is a new blogger from Fl so drop by and meet her, if you haven't already.

The klepto kitty in this video reminds us somewhat of Merci. She used to go through the house and collect all the toys - dog and cat - and anything else she wanted to claim and pile them neatly in her den in the bedroom. And then Buddy moved in and he'd do the opposite. He'd take all her stash and strew things around the house. (We even have a design on Zazzle of these two and Merci's partial stash Buddy-style.) Merci's neat streak couldn't compete with Buddy's dencleaning habits any more and she finally gave up.

If the video doesn't play, click here.

Dogs in Brazil was a guest columnist on Grouchy Puppy Days on Friday and Jan (not our Jan) told the story of how she and her husband moved from England to Brazil for a cushy life and instead found a mission - rescuing dogs. Read about Pluto, a puppy she found nearly dead in the street, took to the vet for an exam, and brought home to die. But he lived.

Jan and her husband are working toward becoming a non-profit organization, but meanwhile they still need donations to keep them going while they try to figure out what they can do next. They lost their bakery during the 2010 flooding in Brazil but still volunteered their time to help other areas with injured, sick and suddenly homeless animals. They have 17 hungry mouths to feed and shelter.

We Remember

Hey, Cyndi here. Since this is the Weekend of Remembrance on the CB, we have been remembering our handsome mancat Crystal, our sisters Jenny and Grayce, and all those who came before us. We've also been thinking of all those affected by the terrible storms and events of the past few months. We are happy when we hear another blogger is safe, but sad for the loss of lives, both human and furries.

The Weekend of Remembrance continues. There are candles lit for "all furriends affected by bad weather in Midwest & Southeastern US, all Japanese critter suffering from the big earthquake, and for all our furriends of the CB who left us way to early."

There is a party over at Floof & Fur for kitty bloggers who left for the bridge, Sweet Praline is the mascot. Be sure to stop by and join the celebration. They are are no longer physically with us, but they live on in our hearts and memories.

These are hosted by the Cat Blogosphere but the CB has many woofie and bunny friends who might like to stop by and share memories too. Freckles of Freckles & Deb recently left on her final adventure and Sugie Bunny of Raspberry Rabbits also. Richie had to leave just a few days before his shared birthday celebration with his sister Ronnii. There are too many to recount, but you know who they are.  You are in our thoughts!
